In the modern-day business world, so many things can affect the day to day running of your company. These can be both external and internal. They key is to identify these as soon as possible. This will help to ensure continuity within your organisation.
External Challenges
These are sometimes easier to ‘diagnose’. For example:
- Current market conditions
- Budget cuts by your clients
- Increased supplier charges (higher cost of production or services).
‘Internal’ Challenges
Challenges internal to your company are often more difficult to identify. Key to this is cause and effect. All too often we see the effect whereas the cause is not always so obvious.
Internal challenges can often involve difficult and honest conversations with your staff. For example:
- How would you approach a conversation with regards to mental health?
- Would you know the signs to look for?
- Do you have enough support within your company or a ‘mental health first aider’?
Recruitment introduces its own challenges. Before delving into recruitment, try looking at your business needs and employees as a whole. As an example, when finding new people. Do you spend lots of money recruiting for new staff when if you look deeper, you have a fantastic employee development opportunity? Individual and team training to can make them ‘be the best they can be’.

The Survey
SVC recently undertook a survey to find out what are the main challenges companies face with regards to:
- Staff
- Training, and
- Recruitment.
We have compiled the results into a handy report for your consumption.
As expected, the main business challenge respondents find that they are facing are:
- Client and customer budget cuts (21%), and
- Current market conditions for their industry (18%).
This is especially clear when it comes to the uncertainty of Brexit. Many companies are keeping their cards close to their chests and waiting out the storm.
What Else?
The survey also gave companies the opportunity of adding their own thoughts about their challenges. These included:
- Brexit Uncertainty.
- British steel insolvency.
- Getting heads of department to allow staff to have time off for training.
- General skill sets of those that have been in middle management and have come from the shop floor.
- Soft-skills as well as technical skills.
- Strategic leadership skills.
- Change management.
