Common mistakes in a job application

September 20, 2024

Finding the dream job for you starts with making a good first impression. Julia Palmer-Randle, the Recruitment Business Manager at SVC Solutions, reveals some common mistakes to avoid

Securing a new job can be hard, especially in a highly competitive market. Hundreds of hopeful applicants might be bidding for that one prized position. So how do you make your CV stand out from the crowd?

The first challenge is to survive the cut. Whoever has the gruelling task of going through scores of applications will have to be brutal to whittle down the candidates. They will have to sort the wheat from the chaff and get rid of uninspiring applications so the focus can turn to the shortlisted candidates.

As such, it is important to be aware of the mistakes to avoid to ensure you stay in the running for that sought-after opportunity.

Here’s a list of common mistakes which are made in job applications….and how to avoid them.

1/ Not following instructions

Every firm will have its own unique application process, even if it is using a third-party recruiter. Be careful to follow instructions when filling out your application including ensuring you meet the deadline. Failure to follow instructions will frustrate your potential employer and will pretty much seal your fate before you have even started. Also remember there is an increasing use of AI in recruitment, so if you don’t follow the guidelines, the computer will say no.

2/ Failing to write a covering letter

A covering letter will set out your stall about your achievements and shout about why you are right for this job. A failure to write a covering letter is, without doubt, a missed opportunity. You should make sure your covering letter is well constructed, relevant and captures the attention of the potential employer. You want to win their attention and make them enthusiastic to read your CV. Avoid cliches and insincerity which will reflect badly on you. Also make sure you address your letter to the correct person; it is your first step in creating a good impression, so don’t waste it.

3/ Avoid irrelevances in your CV

Imagine reading through page after page of CVs – it can be incredibly draining. So avoid irrelevances when writing your CV. Of course, you want to give a sense of yourself and celebrate the attributes which will set you apart from the crowd, but keep it concise and as relevant as possible. If you have limited space, you must use it to the best advantage.

4/ Bad grammar

Nothing says “unprofessional” more obviously than bad grammar or spelling. Of course, not everyone is a wordsmith, but make sure that what you write is spelt correctly and your sentences are properly constructed. Otherwise you will give the impression of being careless and slapdash, and no-one wants to hire someone who has those characteristics. If you have any doubts, get someone else to cast an eye over your application to make sure it is grammatically correct.

5/ Generic applications

If you are going for a job, make sure you show your intent from the get-go. That means writing an application which is specifically tailored to the vacancy. Sending out a generic application demonstrates a lack of commitment and is sure to be fast tracked to the bin. Filling out job applications does take time, but if you want to secure the job it is case of quality over quantity.

6/ Leave gaps in your employment history

People are naturally suspicious, so if you leave a gap in your employment history your potential employer is going to ask why. Be honest. If you have a few months when you have not been employed, explain why and, if you can, demonstrate how this enhances your experience.

7/ Putting down a referee without asking them

Some employers might want to check out your character with your referee before they offer you an interview. So make sure you check with your referee that they are happy to fulfil that role.

If you avoid these pitfalls, you should be able to secure an interview for your dream job and then the rest is down to you.
