    Technical Services Manager (M&E)

    • Salary: Up to £55,000 p.a. (dependent on experience) plus company vehicle
    • Hours: 8am – 5pm
    • Contract: Permanent
    • Location: Bishop’s Stortford (office based) hybrid working considered
    • Reporting to: Head of Client Services
    • Out of Hours Call Out: 1 in 4 management rota

    About the role

    This is a managerial position within the Technical Services function, responsible for managing the performance, development, and direction of the Technical Support Team. You will act as the technical authority within the business — ensuring the consistent delivery of high-quality engineering services, technical compliance, and innovation across all contracts and projects.

    The Technical Services Manager will lead a small, high-performing team to provide expert-level technical guidance, drive continuous improvement, and maintain client confidence through strong leadership and technical excellence.

    Key Responsibilities

    Technical Leadership

    • Undertake site surveys and produce maintenance agreements in line with compliance standards
    • Assist with contract reviews and renewals, ensuring effective, compliant, and profitable delivery.
    • Provide expert-level guidance on HVAC systems, plant room equipment, and building services to engineers, clients, and internal teams.
    • Lead complex fault-finding, root cause analysis, and resolution processes to achieve first-time fixes and optimise system performance.
    • Support small works design, specifications, and delivery, ensuring technical accuracy, compliance, and quality outcomes.
    • Conduct detailed site audits and technical performance assessments, producing clear reports and recommendations.
    • Maintain up-to-date technical documentation, asset registers, and digital schematics to ensure knowledge is accessible and current.
    • Act as a subject matter expert in client meetings, offering advice on energy efficiency, plant lifecycle, and technical upgrades.
    • Review and approve contractor technical submissions, ensuring high standards of workmanship and system integrity.
    • Participate in the out-of-hours technical support rota and act as the escalation point for complex technical issues.

    Leadership & Team Management

    • Lead, mentor, and develop the Technical Support Team to deliver exceptional engineering support and technical advice.
    • Oversee resource planning, workload allocation, and performance reviews for all team members.
    • Foster a culture of accountability, innovation, and continuous technical improvement within the team.

    Innovation & Continuous Improvement

    • Identify and implement new technologies, engineering methods, and digital tools to enhance system performance and client experience.
    • Champion sustainability, energy efficiency, and smart building technologies.
    • Collaborate with other department heads (Operations, QSHE, Projects) to align technical standards with service delivery and operational excellence.

    About You
    You will be an experienced technical professional with deep knowledge of HVAC systems and M&E building services. You’ll have proven leadership experience, strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and the ability to drive both technical excellence and team performance.

    Essential Skills & Experience:

    • Demonstrable technical expertise within building services or mechanical/electrical engineering.
    • Strong leadership and people management experience.
    • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
    • Proven ability to develop and implement technical standards and procedures.
    • Commitment to safety, compliance, and continuous improvement.

    Essential:

    • Level 3 (minimum) qualification in Mechanical or Electrical discipline
    • Strong understanding of building services and maintenance operations
    • Proven experience in a supervisory or managerial technical role
    • Excellent communication, organisation, and problem-solving skills
    • Commercial awareness with an ability to balance client needs and business objectives
    • Full UK driving licence

    Desirable:

    • IOSH Managing Safely or equivalent H&S qualification
    • Experience or knowledge of Heat Networks or Energy Centres
    • Multi-skilled (mechanical/electrical) background
