Technical Estimator
Salary: £35,000 per annum
Location: Based near Bishop’s Stortford
Hours: Monday to Friday, 40 hours per week
About the Role
As a Technical Estimator, you will play a pivotal role within our clients Technical Support Team, acting as the crucial link between their field engineers, operations team, and clients. You will be responsible for producing accurate, timely quotations for reactive maintenance and small works across commercial building services. By building clear scopes of work, sourcing competitive pricing, and maintaining strict quality control, you will ensure that their contracts run profitably and their clients remain highly confident in their service delivery. Key Responsibilities
Estimating & Procurement
- Quotation Management: Prepare and complete daily quotations for reactive maintenance jobs and small works, actively prioritizing urgent, service-disrupting inquiries.
- Scope Building: Review engineer reports, site photographs, and job information to develop clear, comprehensive scopes of work.
- Sourcing & Pricing: Source materials and negotiate pricing with suppliers and sub-contractors to ensure competitive and profitable estimates.
- Financial Control: Support effective Work in Progress control, ensuring all contract terms and profit margins are met or exceeded.
Coordination & Operational Support
- Project Handover: Assist with the planning and procurement of approved works, ensuring a smooth, fully briefed handover to the Operations team.
- Technical Guidance: Act as a consistent office-based resource, providing technical support to the Operations team, field engineers, and clients throughout the week.
- Workflow Management: Confidently manage multiple workstreams and respond swiftly to quote queries, revisions, and variations.
- Note: This role involves providing operational cover during peak periods and participating in an out-of-hours call-handling rota (currently 1 week in 4).
Compliance & Client Relations
- Client Communication: Build and maintain excellent relationships with clients, managing communications, and effectively resolving complaints or invoice discrepancies.
- Health & Safety: Proactively identify and escalate any health, safety, or compliance risks associated with proposed works.
- Administration: Maintain highly accurate audit trails, spreadsheets, and records across internal maintenance systems.
What You Bring
Essential:
- Level 3 (minimum) trade qualification in at least one relevant discipline, alongside an IOSH certification.
- Time-served knowledge of commercial building services and maintenance standards.
- Proven experience working alongside multi-disciplinary maintenance workforces, suppliers, and sub-contractors.
- Strong commercial awareness with an understanding of energy-saving best practices and product trends.
- Excellent IT proficiency (Microsoft Office suite) and strong numeracy/literacy skills for accurate pricing.
- Exceptional communication skills, a professional telephone manner, and a proactive, customer-focused ethos.
- Highly organized with the ability to manage a varied workload and strict deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Desirable:
- Multi-skilled trade qualifications.
- Supervisory or first-line management qualifications.
- Health & Safety construction-based qualifications.
- Familiarity with maintenance IT software systems (CAFM) and low-level mechanical/electrical design.
