What makes a good recruiter?

October 12, 2023

A recruiter can change your life…but what skills does it take to become a good recruiter?

Jobs play a major part of our lives. It is not just the money earned to pay the bills and fund your lifestyle – although that is important enough – we spend hours at work every day so finding the right job is crucial for a happy life.

Companies too benefit from having the best employees, those talented members of staff who go the extra mile and who can become a firm’s greatest asset.

But before any of this can happen, the employee and the employee have to be connected and that is where the recruiter comes in.

A recruiter must understand the company and its needs as well as the candidate’s qualities to make sure they are a good fit. Communication skills are vital so a recruiter can find out what both parties are bringing to the table and whether they are compatible.

Communication skills also come to the fore when the process of recruitment has started to make sure information is conveyed effectively. Failure to communicate can lead to, at best, delays, at worst, a missed opportunity.

They say knowledge is power and a good recruiter should also have an insight into the business for which they are recruiting.

Networking skills are another vital tool in the recruiter’s armoury. A good recruiter will have contacts in industry and by building relationships with candidates, clients and other professionals, they will be able to find the perfect match between employer and employee.

That said, recruiters should also be creative and thinking outside the box can produce original – and successful – results. They should explore imaginative ways of attracting potential candidates and should lead the field, not follow the crowd. And with the ever-changing landscape of industry, the recruiter also needs to stay up to date with trends so they are ready to adapt to the market.

Navigating forms and permissions can be a challenge and, as such, good recruiters must have a keen eye for detail. They need to be able to pay close attention to both the requirements of the job and whether the candidate is suitably qualified for it. If not, they are wasting everyone’s time and time is precious.
Finding the right person for the job is not always as easy as it sounds but a good recruiter will have the persistence to achieve their goal. Easy fixes are not necessarily the right fixes but a good recruiter will not give up until they find the right candidate for the right job.

Integrity and honesty are premium. If clients and businesses trust the recruiter, a relationship will be established from which good candidates will find the best employment prospects.

And while finding a new job can be exciting, it can also be stressful. A good recruiter must have the emotional intelligence to understand the anxiety which comes with job hunting. They should be supportive of the candidate and be able to employ tact and diplomacy as needed while also keeping an eye on the best outcome. Results matter and can literally change your life.
